FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT INSURANCE AND REPAIR
- Must I obtain two or three estimates? No. No one can tell you to obtain more than one estimate. You, as the car owner, may do so should this be your desire. Generally the insurance company handling your repair will send an adjuster to you, to write an estimate on damages inquired.
- I was told that I must take my car to a certain shop, must I do this? No, this act is known as steering, and is illegal in the state of Texas. It is your right to choose freely where you go for repairs.
- What is the best procedure for me to get quality repairs and get my vehicle back on the road? Contact the insurance company responsible for covering the damage, and file a claim. Take your vehicle to a reputable repair shop, leave your claim information, and any estimates from the insurance company with the shop manager, or estimator. Call the insurance company and advice them of the vehicles location. Please note if your vehicle is considered drivable you should not leave it until repairs are to be started.
- I don’t believe I was at fault in the accident. Should I use my own policy or try to collect form the other party? Try to collect from the other party because you will not have to pay a deductible. Also if you use the other person’s policy, you may be entitled to a rental car while yours is being repaired, and no accident will be charged against your policy.
- Who is responsible to the repair shop for my bill-the insurance company or me? You are. You may direct your insurance company to pay the repair shop, but the payment must be in the hands of the repair agency when you pick up your vehicle. Keep in mind you are the customer and the insured. The repair shop owner looks to you for payment and you look to the insurance for payment.
- Who is responsible for the safety, workmanship and guarantee of my auto repairs-insurance company or repair shop? Generally, the repair shop is responsible.
- If I go to a drive in claims service, do I have to take the car to its preferred shop? No. However, if you decide to take your car to a preferred shop, ask your insurance to implement its “elects to repair” clause (check your insurance policy.) This may cause the insurance company to be responsible for, among other things, the quality of repairs.
- I am having a problem with the insurance company. Can the state insurance commissioner’s office help me? Perhaps, yes, but the Commissioner’s authority is limited! The commissioner’s office in your sate can describe the scope of authority for you.
- I do not think the insurance company included all the damage on the estimate I was given. Can you fix it? Any damages occurred that appear to be accident related will be submitted to the insurance company for supplemental approval. However, it is solely the decision of the insurance company to approve or decline additional repairs. If declined and there is still a desire for additional repairs you may do so at your own personal expense.
- How does supplemental damage prolong the repairs to my vehicle? Any additional required repairs or damaged parts must be submitted to the insurance company for reinspection. Supplemental parts or repairs may not move forward until approval is received from the insurance company. This process may take several days, including time to order and receive any additional parts needed. Keep in mind the original date given for repairs to be completed is always subject to change.
- What if I feel that my vehicle is a total loss? It is not the decision of the shop to total your vehicle, this is a decision made by the insurance company handling your repairs.
